Foxe’s Acts & Monuments (L20)

Is the language of Foxe still compelling today?

Foxe’s pieces are written with great detail and stability, in a voice well known and clear for the time. However, today one would find that his works are being read less and less due to the untimely style of speaking. Despite the slight language barrier between now and the times when he was greatly popular, the information is still just as compelling today as the day it was written. His Acts & Monuments had become a common household item in his time; families would read and discuss this together. In contrast, nowadays his works are analyzed in classes rather than in homes (more often than not), they shape and influence writers today, and overall, Foxe’s works have impacted the English language itself a great deal.
